News and events in the McCray Lab
September 2025: CMTRF Global Research Convention in Boston
Brett helped plan this annual conference that brings together scientists, clinicians, industry partners, and patients to focus on developing treatments for CMT. He got to meet several patients with TRPV4 neuromuscular disease, including Stephanie Carmody, who leads a TRPV4 patient facebook group. It was an exciting and inspiring event!

June 2025: Vatsala Singh joins the lab as a research technician.
We are happy to welcome Vatsala into our group. She recently completed a masters in biomedical engineering at the University of Michigan. She brings experience in tissue culture, protein engineering, cell adhesion, and cellular responses to flow dynamics.
January 2025: Alexis Meeker joins the lab as a research technician.
We are excited to have Alexis join our group after finishing her undergraduate work at the University of Michigan Flint. She has a strong background in molecular biology approaches through her prior lab experiences.
January 2025. Rodrigo Cartaxo joins the lab as a research specialist.
We are lucky to have Rodrigo join our group. He comes to us from Carl Koschmann's lab at UM where he did exciting work on how the extracellular matrix influences growth of pediatric brain tumors. He brings extensive experience in cellular and molecular biology approaches and mouse models of disease.
July 18, 2024: A second publication!
We are excited to announce that we have had a second manuscript published in Brain! This paper describes a combinatorial approach to determine whether TRPV4 variants are likely to be disease-causing or benign. We used clinical, genetic, and structural analyses combined with cell-based studies, including ion channel activity, cytotoxicity, protein-protein interactions, and expression levels.
July 1, 2024: The McCray lab publishes our first paper
After months of work our first manuscript has been accepted for publication in Brain. This paper focuses on outlining the clinical features of TRPV4-related neuromuscular disease. In it, we describe demographic and detailed clinical data from 68 affected patients and highlight common manifestations of the disease.
September 15, 2023: The McCray lab conducts first experiment
First western blot conducted by the McCray lab at the University of Michigan!

August 31, 2023: New Faces: Brett McCray, MD, PHD
Michigan medicine welcomes the McCray lab with an interview with Brett
July 17, 2023: Linh Vo joins the lab as a postdoctoral fellow
Linh recently defended her PhD thesis at Wayne State and has a background in studying human disease in cellular models.
July 1, 2023: The McCray lab officially opens at the University of Michigan
Brett welcomes Gage Kosmanopoulos, and they get to work setting up the lab.
